DEFORMITIES

DEFORMIDADES

The vertebral column is a structure made up of 7 cervical vertebrae, 12 thoracic vertebrae, 5 lumbar vertebrae, and the sacrum (fusion of 5 vertebrae and coccyx).

  • SCOLIOSIS

    Spinal deformities are:

    • Congenital scoliosis: Type of scoliosis is present at birth, due to poor formation or fusion of the vertebral units.

    • Idiopathic scoliosis: Type of scoliosis that indicates that to date no cause(s) has been found to cause it. Idiopathic scoliosis is classified as:

    • EOS: Scoliosis of Early Origin

    • AIS: Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis
(Idiopathic: indicates that something occurs spontaneously or has an unknown cause)

    • Syndromic scoliosis

    • Functional scoliosis (Produced by difference in the length of the lower limbs)

    • Neuromuscular scoliosis: This type of scoliosis is caused by a problem in the nervous system that affects the muscles. (may include: Cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida and polio etc).

    • Hyper kyphosis: Due to Scheuermann’s Disease, Curved back, Osteoporosis

    • Hyper lordosis: Present in Olympic gymnastics athletes and other pathologies of the sagittal plane.

  • SCOLIOSIS Treatments

    Treatments for scoliosis are:

    • Conservative treatment: Conservative treatment is performed through Orthotic management: CTLO, TLSO, LSO, designed specifically for each patient and their three-dimensional biomechanical presentation.

    • CAD / CAM: Computer designed spine orthosis / Computer manufactured spine orthosis. Without this technology it is impossible to manage each plane (Sagittal / Transverse and Coronal individually and combining them). This is the GOSS System: “Gomez Orthotic Spine System”

    • Surgical interventions: The two most common surgical interventions for scoliosis are growth rods (for children who continue to grow), and spinal arthrodesis, surgery to permanently fuse two or more vertebrae of the spine, in order to maintain stable fusion and prevent deformities from progressing.
